The 5th, and possibly most exiting episode yet, of the Animated War Mapper’s (AWM’s) series on Operation Barbarossa is now available.

byNigel Askeyon August 31,2024

This episode concerns the period from 2nd to 24th August 1941, and Army Group North’s operations around the Luga River (in the north), and Novgorod and Staraya Russa (in the south). It includes the ongoing German 4th Panzer Group’s push north and east towards Leningrad, the Soviet counteroffensive near Staraya Russa, and the swift German counter-offensive to destroy this attack. Of note, to me at least, was how supposedly slow German infantry divisions, and 1-2 motorised divisions were able to conduct major penetrations and then encircling operations without a panzer division being anywhere near. This was not unique to the northern sector of Operation Barbarossa, and was also repeated in the central and southern sectors during 1941. As usual, AWM’s 5th episode is packed with information and visual detail.
